What Are the Differences Between the Types of Licenses?

Open New License Requirements:

• Purchase through a volume license reseller.
• Minimum initial order of five licenses. (One Windows Small Business Server 2003 license meets this qualification because five CALs are included.)

Retail/FPP License Requirements:

• Purchase through a brick and mortar or online retailer.
• No minimum purchase is required.

Benefits of an Open New License:

• Savings over an FPP license.
• You can track your licenses using the eOpen Web site vs. having to manage them as paper licenses.

Benefits of Software Assurance Include:

• The Microsoft Software Assurance program gives you automatic access to additional support, tools, updates, and training to help you deploy and use software efficiently. With Software Assurance, you can acquire the latest software automatically, spread payments annually, and benefit from resources such as training, TechNet Plus access, and more. To learn more about the benefits, please see the Software Assurance for Volume Licensing page.

Why can't I just have my ordinary IT person install SBS2003R2?
This document below explains the common mistakes that non-SBS trained technicians make!
The results are a poorly configured server, and your SBS server will NEVER run correctly!
(Microsoft recommends that only a Certified Small Business Specialist, install SBS2003R2)

SBITS.Biz also recommends Trend Micro House SMB for Virus control and Spam.

What kind of hardware do I need?
This really Depends on How many Users you are going to have on the server.
Also if you are any LOB or SQL, ISA or other Services.
I recommend a Single or Dual Proc 64Bit Microprocessor. (Like Intel's Xeon or AMD's Opteron.)
2GB Min for Standard, and 4GB for Premium.
Min RAID1 For OS and RAID5 for more performance, so from 2-6 Drives
All this depends on what your business Needs are!

How long does it take to install SBS2003R2 Server?
It takes a Qualified SBS Technician 1-2 FULL Long Days to Set up and configure a SBS Server,
(This is more or less, depending on migration of database and users.)
Then about 1hr For Each PC (Depending on how well the PC's are Serviced)
(This example is moving from a peer to peer Environment.)
After install and PC's set up, there are always a couple of things that Pop up.
But Typically 4-5 days is average for a Small Office.
I recommend that I install the server on a weekend, (Sat-Sunday)
This impacts most businesses less, and no I don't charge more for this, it's just part of my service.)
